"The Long Day". 84km for the Big Red 250 runners and 42km for the Big Red 150 runners. No small feat.

It started well before dawn with runners up, packing, eating and toeing the start line from the early hours for a 6am start.

Anticipation was high as the sea of red flashing lights made it's way into the distance with a hint of the sun coming up over the horizon. Today's course consisted of a bit of everything, but loads of everyone's favourite - bloody gibber plains!

The sun came up and and the kilometres clocked over. By midday we had our Big Red 150 winner Michael Marshall and next runners starting to come through the finish at Checkpoint 6 line and by 2pm, we had our fist Big Red 250 runner Ralph Coley cross the line in Camp 5 and confirm his place as the 2018 Big Red 250 winner.

All runners are now back in camp, before midnight Some still up and keeping warm by the far, others have hit the sack for a well deserved sleep.

Tomorrow's untimed 8km race is the chance to take it nice and easy, and enjoy the last stretch of road before finishing with a well deserved beer at the pub. The winners have been cemented and tomorrow is all about a bit of fun, plus traditionally the most outrageous costume.

Lots of photos and video from the whole event including the final finish back in Birdsville on day 6 are available on Facebook here!
