'Birdsville is located in the heart of Australia, on the edge of the famous Simpson desert. It is not a leisurely 2-3 hours drive from the capital city, but that's the beauty… It is in the middle of bloody nowhere!'

Transport Options

We know that you may find getting to Birdsville a little bit daunting, so we have identified a number of options to make things easier for you.

Let’s just run through your main transport options below.

1.    By Car

Drive your own

Birdsville is around 1,900 km from Sydney (allow 2.5 days drive) , 1,600 km from Brisbane (allow 2 days drive) and 1,200 km from Adelaide (allow 1.5 days drive). It is accessible by 2WD, however if you want to venture into the desert itself at some stage you will require a 4WD vehicle.

So, you can make a bee line to Birdsville or alternatively you can take your time and do some outback touring and sightseeing on the way! Why not plan to go to the Bedourie Campdraft, Gymkana and Rodeo on the 5th to 7th July, just 2 hours from Birdsville before the Big Red Run, for a great Outback experience.

Car Pooling

If any competitors or supporters are intending to drive to the event, and have a spare seat or two that they wish to offer to another competitor to help split the cost of petrol, we will be keeping a car pooling register. You can contact us with details of when and where you will depart from, and how many seats you wish to fill, or if you are looking for a lift to the event, we will need to know where you live.

We will keep this information in our register, and put people in touch with one another to work out suitable car pooling arrangements to help everyone get to the event in the most effective way.

4 WD Hire

We are organising a 4WD car hire special package for competitors who would prefer to travel in a hired 4WD.  Costs and details are still to be finalised and confirmed, but we are hoping to be able to offer 10 day hire of a large 4wd with unlimited km and lowest insurance excess for around $1,000. This may appeal to people who want to drive, and don’t own a 4wd but would prefer to take one due to some of  the travel required on dirt roads.

If this is option is something that you are interested in, please contact us, and we can get this sorted for you once the arrangements are finalised. This 4 WD Hire option may appeal to overseas entrants who want to do a bit of a self- drive outback adventure

2.     By Bus

For those who don't fancy the long drive themselves, this is an option for you. We are co-ordinating 12 seater mini bus transport for competitors and supporters to and from Birdsville. The best part about this option is not only the affordability but you can sit back, relax and enjoy our beautiful countryside and the sights along the way. We are currently seeking volunteers to drive these buses, to ensure costs are kept down for our competitors. Anyone with a licence is able to drive these buses, so if you are selecting this option, please let us know if you would like to volunteer for some driving.
