Big Red Run Volunteers

Volunteering at Big Red Run can be a very rewarding experience. Our volunteers are often family or friends of a runner, some have connections to Type 1 Diabetes, and some have a passion for running, a love of the outback or simply a wish to contribute to a great cause. All come together for the week, and work hard to help us deliver a safe and memorable event and help us to raise significant funds for Type 1 Diabetes research and support. 

Before completing your application, please take the time to read the following, to ensure you plan adequate transport to and from Birdsville, and are available for the duration of the training and event.

The tasks we need help with

An event of this nature needs a range of helpers including medial staff, course markers, communication specialists, drivers, safety marshals and general camp helpers. Once we select the team we’ll work with all volunteers so you know your roster and what’s expected. All volunteers will receive preparation advice and notes before the event, a training day in Birdsville and ongoing support during the event.

Application Process

We will be accepting volunteer applications until 7th February 2014. Applicants will be advised by the end of February if their volunteer application has been successful. We suggest applicants tentatively arrange leave from work at the start of the application process to ensure their availability as per below. Successful applicants will be required to complete an online medical questionnaire, and provide emergency contact information. All medical information will be kept strictly confidential and will be used to support all volunteers and help everyone enjoy the event in safety.
 

How do we select volunteers?

After the 7th of February we’ll look at all the applications and will do our best to allocate volunteers to the roles most suited to their background, experience and desires. While your special skills and background will form the basis of our decision we are also looking for people prepared to jump in and help out and with a willingness to be challenged. Helping on this event may well be the experience of a lifetime – so feel free to tell us about your passions and why you’d like to be involved.

Transport, Accommodation & Food

Transport 
A number of transport options are available on our website. If you are planning to drive, you should allow the following timeframes: * Brisbane - 2 days each way
* Adelaide - 2 days each way
* Sydney - 3 days each way
* Melbourne - 3 days each way

Accommodation
Once you arrive in Birdsville, you will be either be accommodated in tents with other volunteers, or in the sports hall in Birdsville. The camp moves from Birdsville and through the desert during the week. Many volunteers bring their own 4WD and take care of their own sleeping arrangements. If you are not bringing your own vehicle, we'll provide accommodation in shared 4 person canvas tents. You will need to provide your own sleeping bag and mat. Your gear bag will be transported for you, make sure you are prepared with the mandatory gear
Food 
You will need to be able to bring your own food for the week. Volunteers will be included in the pre and post event dinners, but you need to supply all other food. There is a pub and bakery in Birdsville which serve great food. While in the desert for the duration of the event, volunteers will not readily have access to these facilities, and must be prepared with non- perishable foods. Event organisers will supply drinking water, and hot water for preparing food and drinks. Volunteers should bring foods that do not need cooking, since we will not have access to cooking facilities. Many outdoor shops stock dehydrated food which are great for all meals, you just need to add hot water.

Availability

Volunteers in some roles will need to undergo training in the months before the event. Course teams will be trained in the use of the navigational tablets and volunteers in management roles will be briefed on their roles and responsibilities in the lead up to the event. A desert driving course will be held on the afternoon of Monday 30th June 2014. Any volunteers who will be driving during the event should attend this course. Drivers will also be shown how to use the navigation tablets. Volunteer training will be held in Birdsville on the morning of Friday 26th June 2015. All volunteers are required to attend this session. Registration and gear checks for the runners will be held in the afternoon, and some volunteers will be assisting with this.

The event starts on Saturday 27th June, and finishes on Thursday 2nd July. Most competitors will depart on Friday 3rd July. Volunteers are encouraged to stay for the two day Birdsville Big Red Bash music festival held at Big Red after the race on 5th and 6th July. Some small roles will need to be filled for the concert, including traffic marshalling, issuing tickets, set up of stage and concert area.
