Volunteering at the Big Red Run

Volunteering at Big Red Run is a very rewarding experience. Our volunteers come from many different walks of life and for many different reasons. They may be family or friends of a runner, have connections to Type 1 Diabetes, have a passion for running, a love of the outback or simply a wish to contribute to a great cause. All our volunteers come with enthusiasm and generosity, and all work hard to help us deliver a safe and memorable event which raises significant funds for Type 1 Diabetes research and support.

 

Before completing your application, please take the time to read the following information to ensure that you know what to expect and how to plan for your volunteer experience.

Volunteer Tasks

The generosity of our volunteers makes it possible to run this amazing event and help in many different capacities, including camp setup & packdown, marking, forerunning and clearing the the 250km runner course, 4wding, marshalling, running checkpoints, providing medical support, running the start and finish line and monitoring runners’ gps trackers. We also have the new role of kitchen hand volunteers this year, because for the first time, we’re offering volunteers the exciting option of paying to be catered for during the event.

 

Responsibility for the tasks above are split between our seven volunteer teams, and you’ll be able to tell us which team you’d like to be in you when apply. The volunteer application portal has detailed information on each team and what skills and requirements are needed, which you can browse before applying.

 

When You Need to be Available

Volunteer training will be held in Birdsville on the morning of Friday 23rd June 2017. All volunteers are required to attend this session. The event starts on Saturday 24th June 2017, and finishes on Thursday 29th June 2017. You’ll need to be available throughout this whole time.

If you’re bringing a 4wd that you’re happy to use while volunteering you’ll need to arrive a little earlier, to attend the desert driving course on the afternoon of Thursday 22nd of June.

Finally, we need some help between the 20th June and 23rd June to get everything set up, so if you can arrive early, please let us know in your application.

Most competitors and volunteers will depart on Friday 30th June, unless they’re staying for the Birdsville Big Red Bash music festival on 4th to 6th July, which volunteers receive a free ticket for.

Application Process

We will be accepting volunteer applications until 10th March 2017. Applicants will be advised by the 17th March 2017 if their volunteer application has been successful. We suggest applicants tentatively arrange leave from work at the start of the application process to ensure their availability.

Once you submit your application we’ll look over it, and get in touch with you to discuss your application and let you know if you’ve been accepted as a volunteer. Apart from the team-specific special skills and background that we’re looking for, we’re also looking for people who are flexible, prepared to jump in and help out in many different ways, and who have a willingness to be challenged. Helping at this event may well be the experience of a lifetime – so feel free to tell us about your passions and why you’d like to be involved!

If you’re accepted, we’ll send you information and work with you in the preceding months so that you’re fully prepared, ready for your experience, and know what to expect. Before the event you’ll also be required to complete an online medical questionnaire, and provide emergency contact information. All medical information will be kept strictly confidential and will only be used to support and help you enjoy the event in safety.
